Bone inlay, also known as intarsia, is a home decor trend in which fragments of bone or shell are adhered to the frame of a furniture piece. It is most commonly used on flat surfaces – such as the sides and tops of tables, or the front of a sideboard.

Each furniture piece that comes out of the artisanal process features ethically sourced bone fragments contrasted against a darker background – resulting in a gorgeous, one-of-a-kind pattern that works as statement decor in its own right.

These types of furniture pieces possess meticulous, mesmerizing patterns – which are a direct result of a generations-old tradition called bone inlaying.

Centuries ago, bone-inlaying was an artisan’s craft in India. The process involved – and still does – hours of handcraft work; on average, it takes about a month to produce a single bone inlay masterpiece.

The process begins by cutting and delicately shaping bone fragments. To fill the space between each fragment, the craftsman will use a malleable material to create contrast and a “background” color. In most cases, this material is resin. After the frame is filled, comes the final step of the process: sanding and waxing for a smooth finish.

Inlaying furniture does not always involve bone; some of the most popular materials used in the process include shell and/or ivory. Both of these create the same soft white contrast as would actual bone pieces – however, it is also common to see ‘inlay’ furniture designs featuring colorful dyes over the natural white coloring.

Make sure you are using the correct email address & password you supplied when you first registered. If you have forgotten your password, you can request a new password, please re-type this carefully . You can change your password once you have logged in to your account, to something more memorable.

If the item you purchase, showed as “in stock” but is “sold out” or not available in the time stated, we will notify you within 1-2 business days. You will have the following options:

  • You may wish to wait for the product to come back in stock.
  • You may purchase another item.
  • You may receive a 100% refund

Maharaja’s Own is an online only store currently and we do not have a retail shop. If you wish to view some of our products in person, please contact us to arrange appointment.

Absolutely NOT! The process of producing Bone Inlay furniture and accessories begins with a design or pattern which is carved out of a material – either mother-of-pearl or cruelty-free polished bone from camels or buffaloes that have died of natural causes.

Unfortunately, not at this stage. We only deliver within Australia. Please provide a delivery address where deliveries can be made during normal business hours from Monday to Friday, 9am -5pm. If you would like to make alternate delivery time outside these hours, please contact us.

Yes, someone needs to accept your order. All orders require a signature on delivery. Once your order is dispatched we will email your shipping tracking details so that you can track your order. You can give us an authority to leave your order somewhere safe if you are not available to receive your order. You can also nominate to have your order delivered to your place of work or to a neighbour if you prefer.

All orders are dispatched from our warehouse in Kilmore Victoria, directly to you, so delivery times may vary on location. We aim to manage this process as smoothly as possible. We will keep you informed of when your order is dispatched, and provide a tracking number when possible. It is your responsibility to track your order and be home to accept your delivery.

We use professional furniture carriers for delivery. The order would be shipped through reputed Air Service providers that will deliver the order at your doorstep.

If your furniture is to be delivered to where there is restricted or difficult access, such as an apartment block, high-rise or up or down stairs, you need to notify us. Please give us clear delivery instructions at the time you are placing your order in the: Order Comments field.

At Maharaja's Own, we are passionate about delivering high quality crafted interiors that are made for the long haul. But there are some accidents we’d rather avoid, and that’s because every material, every texture and every piece is crafted with care.

Keeping in tradition, we ask that you take some extra care with your new bone inlay piece so that it stays in the family for years to come. After all, the skilled artisans that hand-crafted your piece use ancient techniques handed down from generation to generation in Rajasthan. These techniques involve a three-step method that starts with intricately hand-carving fragments of ethically sourced bone, which are then affixed onto a base in a mosaic-like design. To finish, resin is used to fill the space around the bone. Because of this, no two pieces are the same, but with a little love, your unique piece will remain with you for a lifetime.

Keep your bone inlay piece in the family by following these tips: 

- To care for bone inlay, dust regularly and do not place in direct sunlight. If spills occur, use a soft, dry cloth to absorb liquids immediately. 

- Do not use abrasives, caustic cleaners, waxes and polishes on the bone inlay surfaces. 

- Dust regularly and avoid placing this beauty in direct sunlight — UV rays can cause fading and damage.  

- Spills happen but be quick to remedy them. Use a soft, dry cloth to absorb liquids immediately.

- Choose your cleaning materials wisely.

- Don’t use abrasives, caustic cleaners, waxes, and polishes on the bone inlay surfaces.

- Where possible, avoid placing your beautiful bone inlay piece near ducted heating vents, as rapid changes in temperature can cause the materials to contract and expand at an unnatural cadence.

No, you cannot return as these items have been specially ordered for you. Moreover, once you own a piece of Maharaja’s Own, you will never want to give it away. 

Items are exchangeable only if unused, in the state you received it, and in the original packaging.

• The return request must be initiated within 5 Days of the receipt of product & Products must be returned within two weeks.

• Please write to us at contact@maharajasown.com.au and state the reason of your return in the email.

• All costs of return shipping need to be borne by the purchaser (Unless the order received is defective). 

Once your returned item has been received, you will be offered the option of exchange or store credit, which ever you prefer.

You are responsible for the return shipping of the item to the Maharaja’s Own Warehouse in Victoria. All items must be returned unused, in re-saleable and original condition. Items also must be returned in original packing and care taken with re-packing to avoid damage during transit. We may organize for a courier on your behalf to collect the item from you. In both cases, you are responsible for the return shipping of the item, including re-packaging of the item, loss or damage to the item.

We make a quality inspection of all orders prior to shipping them to you. If the item you receive is damaged or faulty, you must notify is within 24 hours of receipt of your items by email: contact@maharajasown.com.au  We also request that you provide digital photographs of the damage or faulty item. Once we have received your request we will make

arrangements for the item to be picked up and a replacement item delivered to you at our cost. You will incur no additional costs. If a replacement item is not available we will refund you 100% of the purchase price and shipping costs.

You must inspect your order for damages to packaging in the presence of the driver prior to signing for receipt of your order. If the item you receive is damaged on delivery, you must notify is within 24 hours of receipt of your items by email: contact@maharajasown.com.au. In the event that the items have been damaged, please ensure you all have a record of the driver's name. Please DO NOT SIGN any documents the driver gives you for the receipts of the items, as this will void our claim against the courier company. We also request that you provide digital photographs of the damage item._x000B_Once we have received your claim we will make an assessment and reply by return email with our advice. We will make arrangements for the item to be picked up and a replacement item delivered to you at our cost. You will incur no additional costs. If a replacement item is not available we will refund you 100% of the purchase price and shipping costs.

All of our items are insured for accidental damage or breakage that may occur during shipping. You must inspect your order for damages to packaging in the presence of the driver prior to signing for receipt of your order. If the item you receive is damaged on delivery, you must notify is within 24 hours of receipt of your items by email. We will make arrangements for the item to be picked up and a replacement item delivered to you at our cost. You will incur no additional costs.
